After a Monday deal between Canada and the United States postponed impending tariffs for an extra 30 days, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says we need to make use of the extension.
Trudeau is joining trade, business, and labour experts in Toronto today for a one-day economic summit on Canada-U.S. relations, where the group will aim to develop ways to move forward as a country.
Trudeau says these unique circumstances present Canada with an opportunity to make use of international trade deals that we’ve signed with Asian, South American and European countries.
“Can we look at diversifying our supply chains so that we do have those opportunities internationally, as well? Can we look at new markets that we’re opening up? There are so many opportunities.”
Despite the situation, he says the way Canadians have reacted has been inspiring.
“(It’s inspiring) How people have been stepping up over the past few works, sharing lists of how they can buy Canadian in their everyday lives, reflecting on where they want to spend their dollars on vacation, whether it’s Cape Breton, Banff, or Quebec City.”
Monday’s deal was reached after Trudeau agreed to implement a $1.3 billion border plan, which will see new technology, helicopters, and personnel tackle the flow of fentanyl across the border.
