The City of Saskatoon is expecting to see a surplus come out of the 2024 civic operations budget.

The City’s Chief Financial Officer Clae Hack says the preliminary numbers indicate a surplus of $12.27 million. He attributes the increased funds to the performance of the City’s investment portfolio, which added $9.14 million to the surplus.

Transit Operations generated a $4.96 million surplus thanks to increased ridership and higher than expected UPass revenue.

Administration came up with another $4.87 million, found in savings in staff training and travel, staff vacancies, materials, office supplies and other expenditures among the Civic Operating or Property Tax supported Business Lines.

However, these savings were offset by a $6.48 million deficit in the Snow & Ice Management program. This deficit was mainly from the mass snow event in March and nine additional snow events, only three of which were unbudgeted for.
