After being out for repair between April 2024 and January of 2025, the Aerial Support Unit in Regina has made a strong comeback.
Since February 14th, the aircraft has assisted the Regina Police with nearly 60 calls for service and aided in 13 arrests.
For example, after 8:00 p.m. on February 21, the plane helped officers locate 35-year-old Mark Athel, who was driving around with a burnt-out headlight, but was later charged with drug trafficking.
The very next day, at 10:15 p.m., the plane directed ground patrol members to a suspicious vehicle. A search of 38-year-old Dexter Trafiak’s vehicle revealed that he was in possession of items consistent with drug trafficking, stolen identification documents, and firearms ammunition.
Then just after midnight on Sunday, the plane located a man who was earlier reported for being unwelcome at a residence and threatening a victim in the home. He had stolen a vehicle and fled the scene, but he was no match for the ASU, as it found the man and alerted police that 25-year-old Dana Wallace was hiding under a deck.
