The Health Ministry and the Saskatchewan Health Authority are alerting the public about an increased risk of overdose and death in the Saskatoon area from illicit drugs. A news release from the SHA says over the last week, the Saskatoon Fire Department has responded to an average of 19 overdoses a day and from yesterday to today, the Fire Department responded to 37 overdoses, which suggests an unusually potent and potentially lethal substance circulating in the area.
The SHA adds that no illicit drug is safe and anyone who takes these drugs is at risk of overdose. Anyone who uses illicit drugs or who has a loved one who uses drugs, is strongly urged to take precautions. Free Take Home Naloxone Kits are available across the province. Prairie Harm Reduction in Saskatoon and Access Place in Prince Albert have staff-assisted drug testing using spectrometers.
