With 86 per cent of the vote, Mark Carney won the Liberal Leadership yesterday (Sun) and will become the Prime Minister after a swearing in ceremony. He told the Liberal crowd in his acceptance speech that among his priorities are new trading relationships with reliable trading partners and securing our borders, qnd he’s getting rid of the carbon tax. “When I something’s not working, I will change it. So, my government will immediately eliminate the divisive consumer carbon tax on families, on farmers and small and medium-sized businesses”. Carney also announced stopping the hike in the capital gains tax to help builders. He added that tariffs against the U.S. will remain until the American government shows Canada some respect.
In his farewell speech, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau state that right now Canada is in a nation defining moment. “Democracy is not a given. Freedom is not a given. Even Canada is not a given.” This is in response to the tariffs and the repeated comments from U.S. President Donald Trump about Canada becoming a 51st State. He said Canada is a country that will be diplomatic when we can, but fight when we must, so elbows up.
Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre has posted on social media that the Liberals are trying to trick Canadians into electing them for a fourth term by replacing Trudeau with his economic advisor, Mark Carney, but he considers this the same Liberal team that drove up taxes, housing costs, and food prices. With the announcement of stopping the carbon tax, Poilievre will have to change his message, because it has been a main pillar of the Conservative Party’s campaign against the Liberals.
