As temperatures rise, many Canadians are taking time to do some spring cleaning.
Instead of taking unwanted items to the landfill, Diabetes Canada is accepting donations of clothing, textiles, books, home decor, and small household items as part of its 40 Days 40 Items Challenge, which wraps up on April 17th.
President of National Diabetes Trust, Sean Shannon, says once you’ve collected your items, they can be dropped off at any Diabetes Canada bin, or scheduled for a pick-up.
“We take all those, and we have partners that we sell it to, who in turn make it available to the public or some customer set. They pay us for that, so we effectively monetize your free donation for what the market will pay for it.”
The money is then used to fund the countless initiatives that Diabetes Canada takes part in.
“We run research competitions and pick people with great propositions and help fund those research projects that ultimately help to address people living with it, looking for cures, looking for prevention remedies. Helping people just live with the condition better.”
They also fund kids’ camps, galas, conferences, and educational dietary programs.
This is the fourth year that the challenge has taken place.
