Battlefords RCMP are investigating after the report of a man with a firearm on Mosquito, Grizzly Bear’s Head, Lean Man First Nation.
On April 15th at 6:05 a.m., officers learned that a male damaged an SUV parked at a home on the First Nation and then pointed a firearm at two women who had exited the home. The male then drove away in the SUV without the consent of the owners.
Officers found the vehicle parked at a business on Battleford Road in North Battleford. A traffic stop was initiated but the male driver exited the SUV and pointed a firearm at an officer. He attempted to shoot the officer several times, but the firearm did not discharge. The suspect re-entered the SUV and sped off, and female passenger who had exited the SUV was arrested at the scene without incident.
The vehicle soon became disabled on Railway Avenue, and the driver exited the SUV armed with a knife. He harmed himself before he was arrested and given medical aid until EMS arrived. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries, and a loaded firearm was seized from the vehicle.
Now, 22-year-old Keenan Chakita from Lloydminster is facing eleven charges and is scheduled to appear in North Battleford Provincial Court on April 21. The investigation continues.
