Cankerworms and leafrollers are an issue in Saskatoon each year.
Cankerworms are primarily found on elm trees but also feed on other tree species and often feed together in June and July.
Cankerworms can be seen hanging from silk threads underneath infested trees.
Leafrollers are often concealed when they feed within leaves that are rolled or tied together with silk webbing. Leafrollers can be found on a variety of trees.
The best time to put bands on trees to deter cankerworms is from September to May, but it is not effective for leafrollers.
The city does not control cankerworms or leafrollers as they do not usually impact the health of a tree, however homeowners can contact a horticulture professional for advice to deal with their own trees.
