A walk-off win to clinch first place overall in the Western Canadian Baseball League.
It’s the second box checked off in the list of goals the Saskatoon Berries have for the 2025 season. Third baseman Mason Roell slapped a bases-loaded single to right field, scoring right fielder Evan Janner from third base with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Berries defeated the Weyburn Beavers 5-4 Wednesday night before 2,134 fans at Cairns Field. By clinching first overall, 43-7 Saskatoon will have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. It was a bit of a see-saw game as Roell belted a two-run home run in the first inning to give the Berries a lead, only to have the scrappy visitors tied it in the second frame on a two-run shot from second baseman Zach Tanabe. Weyburn then grabbed a 4-2 lead on a two-run homer from centre fielder Ryan Muizelaar in the fifth inning off starting Saskatoon pitcher Merek Yeager. The Berries received three, near perfect innings of relief from recent pitching addition Jacob Spencer (pictured) as the Beavers only base runner against the right-hander came on an error. In the meantime, Saskatoon battled back to tie the game on a R-B-I triple from centre-fielder Carter Beck in the fifth inning and Janner scoring on a passed ball in the seventh frame. The win was the ninth-in-a-row for the Berries and the ninth win in 10 head-to-head meetings with Weyburn. Next up on the goal parade for Saskatoon is the most regular-season wins. Sylvan Lake had 44 last year, meaning the Berries are only one back with six games remaining. They could equal that Thursday when Saskatoon visits the Regina Red Sox. Following are Les Lazaruk’s post-game interviews with head coach Joe Carnahan, Roell and Spencer plus the official box score from the W-C-B-L website…..
