A 30-year-old Regina man is facing seven charges following a police chase Monday evening.
Shortly before 7:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to a business in the 3700 block of Chuka Boulevard for a report of an impaired driver. The Aerial Support Unit informed ground patrol units that the vehicle appeared to be swerving as it drove down the road, nearly colliding with both parked vehicles and oncoming traffic. A traffic stop determined that two people were inside the vehicle. The driver was showing signs of impairment and provided fraudulent identification. Officers repeatedly asked him to exit the vehicle, to which he refused and sped away.
He flew down residential streets, sometimes at over 100 km/h, disobeying traffic signals, nearly hitting several vehicles and just avoiding a child on a bicycle.
The vehicle finally came to a stop near the 1400 block of Grosvenor Street where both occupants ran from the scene. They were taken into custody after a short foot chase. Police seized meth, cocaine, cash and a pocketknife from the driver. Nickolaos Velikas made his first appearance on these charges in Regina Provincial Court Tuesday afternoon.
