The Saskatoon YMCA has put its hat in the ring to operate the Harry Bailey Aquatic Centre when it reopens in 2026.
The YMCA first expressed interest an operating a City leisure centre in 2017, and again in 2022, with a hope of expanding its community impact through new roles and locations.
CEO DeeAnn Mercier reaffirmed that position at Wednesday’s Planning, Development, and Community Services committee meeting.
“As we look to the future, we are inspired by what’s possible: potentially operating an aquatic leadership academy out of Harry Bailey Aquatic Centre or being the operating partner of the Holmwood Leisure Centre and helping shape community in one of Saskatoon’s newest neighborhoods.”
Administration agreed that the partnership would align with the City’s strategic plan by providing inclusive and accessible recreation and programs, while also reducing the reliance on property tax. Councilor Troy Davies set the record straight on what the partnership would mean for former Harry Bailey employees who were expecting to get their position back.
“No positions would be lost from City positions on this. All the positions… have been absorbed within current facilities, and having a partnership like this would not mean any lost jobs or any people going home without pay cheques,” he explained.
The committee received the report as information, but Council will make the final decision at a later meeting.
