For the first time since 2022, the University of Saskatchewan will be playing in the Vanier Cup after a 22-11 victory over the Queen’s Golden Gaels. The defence played a huge role for both sides but it was Saskatchewan that broke out offensively with touchdowns from Daniel Wiebe and an 85-yard punt return from Daniel Kubongo. Full game recap below…
Queen’s started off the scoring early with Tyler Mullan’s opening kickoff finding the endzone. Defence on both sides was the story early in the first quarter, with neither offence able to cross midfield. The defence on both was the story early in the first quarter, not allowing either offence to cross midfield. Saskatchewan finally broke through seven minutes in with Jake Farrell connecting with Canada West Player of the Year Daniel Wiebe for a 41-yard pass giving the Huskies a 7-1 lead.

The defence for Saskatchewan would continue to dominate in the first quarter including a quarterback sack from Charlie Parks. Queen’s defence stood tall in the opening quarter as well, keeping the Huskies off the board to end the quarter at 7-1.
After another strong defensive stand from Saskatchewan, a roughing-the-kicker penalty gave Queen’s another crack at a first down. They converted, but the Huskies defence halted the drive with a quick 2-and-out. Minutes later, the situation flipped, as a roughing-the-kicker call on Queen’s gave Saskatchewan a fresh set of downs. Like the Huskies earlier, Queen’s defence came up big with a 2-and-out forcing the Dogs to punt once again. Saskatchewan’s offence would strike again in the form of a punt return to house thanks to Daniel Kubongo’s 85-yard return, giving the Huskies a 14-1 lead.

Queen’s had the ball at the three-minute warning and looked to build some momentum, but Seth Hundeby’s second sack of the game forced a fumble that was recovered by Jacob Goldstone putting Saskatchewan inside the 30-yard line on Queen’s side of the field. With Saskatchewan now pressing, it was time for Queen’s defence to make a big play, and they did thanks to Keegan Vanek picking off Jake Farrell to give the Gaels the ball right back. Saskatchewan’s defence stood tall again, not allowing any points from Queen’s and would go into halftime up 14-1.
Queen’s started the second half with an impressive 7-play, 87-yard march down the field resulting in their first touchdown of the game with Alex Vreeken connecting with Cedric Smith making it a 14-8 game. Another 2-and-out forced by the Huskies pinned Queen’s deep in their own zone resulting in a safety, adding to the Huskies lead now at 16-8. Saskatchewan started the next drive at their own 35-yard line making it to the Queen’s 23-yard line before Justin Pace picked off Jake Farrell, his second interception of the afternoon. The final play of the third quarter came from Queen’s quarterback Alex Vreeken connecting with Logan Walton for a 47-yard pickup to put the Gaels at the Huskies 9-yard line.
Now knocking on the door, the Gaels pressed for a touchdown, but Saskatchewan’s defence held and forced Tyler Mullan to settle for a 13-yard field goal, cutting the lead to 16–11. Saskatchewan would make their way into field goal range on their next drive to set up Lukas Scott for a 44-yard field goal, increasing their lead to 19-11. In the final five minutes, Saskatchewan started another drive at the Queen’s 44-yard line but only got to the 19 to set up Lukas Scott once again, this time from 24-yards out to put Saskatchewan up 22-11.
At the three-minute warning, Queen’s began their drive from the 35-yard line trying to mount a comeback. Quarterback Alex Vreeken looked to have completed a pass to Matt Camillo to the Huskies 9-yard line, but an illegal forward pass would cancel the play and move the Gaels back to the 31 and eventually to the 41 after another penalty. Tyler Mullan attempted a 53-yard field goal that just fell short, giving Saskatchewan the ball back to secure a Mitchell Bowl victory and advancing to the Vanier Cup for the first time since 2022.
