The Moose Jaw Police Service is advising the public to be vigilant after several reports of grandparent and parent scams circulating in the community.
The scam involves a caller posing as a potential victim’s grandchild or family member pretending to be arrested or in danger. The caller asks the person for money and states that a lawyer or judge will contact them.
A person impersonating a lawyer, police officer or judge will call and instruct the victim to withdraw a large sum of money and await directions.
Police remind the public that they do not call people to request money and do not request payments in gift cards or bitcoin. A recent incident saw a scammer show up in person to collect payment, police add that they will not do that.
If you or someone you know has fallen victim, contact the police.
