The Saskatoon Blades didn’t take advantage of their game-in-hand on the Brandon Wheat Kings, dropping a 5-1 decision Sunday in Edmonton to the Oil Kings.

Edmonton weathered a spirited start from the Bridge City Bunch and scored the opening goal before the game was three minutes old – part of a three-goal first period on the way to the Oil Kings winning their 32nd game of the season and third of four on the year over the Blue and Gold. Only Elias Pul could solve Edmonton goaltender Ethan Simcoe, ending his shutout bid with 6:29 remaining in the third period. And, rookie Ryley Budd kept the score from getting out of hand against the Blades, stopping 34 of 39 shots. The result leaves Saskatoon in third place in the East Division and sixth spot in the Eastern Conference with a 24-17-4 record for 52 points, one back of Brandon with both teams having played 45 games. The Bridge City Bunch will look to even their record on a three-game Alberta road trip Tuesday when they visit a Medicine Hat team that is sure to be looking for revenge for a 3-2 shootout loss to the Blue and Gold this past Friday at SaskTel Centre.
