The Saskatoon Police Service didn’t get a Victoria Day long weekend day without at least one weapons or firearms incident each day.
According to a lengthy S-P-S news release, the latest of four incidents was yesterday (Monday) when officers responded at 7:50 p.m. to a parking lot in the 200 block of 33rd Street West for a reported assault with a weapon. A 51-year-old male taxi driver was transported to hospital for treatment of injuries believed to be non-life-threatening after being the victim of a discharged BB gun. A taxi rider refused to pay and was asked exit the car, then fired the gun at the driver. The suspect is at large and the S-P-S is asking for anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers.
There were two incidents on Sunday, the first of which was called in at 9 a.m. Officers were dispatched to an apartment building in the 800 block of Confederation Drive for a report of bear spray and a BB gun were discharged into a suite and struck a male with non-life-threatening injuries. Again, the suspect is at large and the S-P-S is asking for anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers.
The second Sunday weapons incident was reported shortly after 5 p.m., saying several people were fighting in a parking lot in the 3100 block of Laurier Drive. Police located two men in possession of a sawed-off shot gun while a female fled on foot, but was located and arrested a short time later in possession of spent ammunition. No one was injured and all parties in the incident are known to each other. An 18-year-old male faces several firearms-related charges, a second male was breaching court-imposed conditions while the female was released without charges.
The long weekend of weapons incidents began on Saturday at about 9 p.m. when officers were called to a bar in the 700 block of Idylwyld Drive North. A 33-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman were arrested at a nearby hotel by members of the S-P-S canine unit after reports had the man inside the bar with a firearm in his waistband. A sawed-off shotgun was found with the man and woman in the hotel. The man faces six firearm-related charges and breach of probation while the woman was found to be in breach of two court conditions.
