The Saskatoon Berries showed off the offence and lop-sided victories they had on the road over Weyburn to start the season in a 15-4 triumph over the Beavers Sunday at Cairns Field.

Weyburn, actually, started well in their bid to win a fifth straight game when they opened the scoring in the second inning. But, Saskatoon responded by scoring in each of the third through seventh frames as they improved their record to 7-2, and a two-and-a-half game lead over the Beavers and Moose Jaw – both 4-4 – in the W-C-B-L’s East Division. The game was called after the top of the eighth inning by the league’s new “mercy rule” – a lead of 10 or more runs after eight innings. All Berries players in the line-up shared in the 16-hit attack, with the exception of catcher Aidan Marien. Leading the way at the plate were the outfielders – left fielder Ethan Murdoch, who was 4-for-5 with 4 R-B-I, right fielder Erik Aguirre drove in five runs while going 2-for-5 at the dish and centre fielder Nash Nichols belted his team-leading third homer of the season and drove in three runs while going 2-for-4. Starting pitcher Michael Sall went a solid five innings for the win, allowing one run on two hits and struck out five. Defensively, Saskatoon didn’t commit an error for the first time in nine games. The Berries broke the game open in the fourth inning by scoring four runs to break a 1-1 tie. Weyburn relief pitcher Keaton Husband hit four batters in the frame – three of whom scored while the fourth came with the bases loaded. Saskatoon also scored seven runs in the fifth inning with five hits and the aid of two Beavers’ errors. The 11-run romp was the third time the Berries have beaten Weyburn by 10 or more runs this season. Saskatoon is off Monday, then welcomes the Medicine Hat Mavericks to Cairns Field for games on Tuesday and Wednesday.
