Tuesday night at Cairns Field was a classic case of good pitching and defence beating good hitting and offence as the Saskatoon Berries trimmed the Medicine Hat Mavericks 6-1.

Diego Quinonez and four relievers combined to limit Medicine Hat to six hits while the Saskatoon defence was error-free for a second straight game. The Berries got more than enough offence of their own with 10 hits, including home runs from designated hitter Brock Laird and third baseman Josh Henson before 1,213 fans. Laird went three-for-four with three R-B-I and wound up a double short of hitting for the cycle. The Mavericks came into the game having scored the most runs of any East Division team in the W-C-B-L with 102 in 10 games while Saskatoon had only allowed a league-fewest 41 runs in nine games. The win was the third in a row for the Berries and improved their record to an East Division-leading 8-2. Medicine Hat dropped to 4-5 and will try to get back to .500 and split a two-game visit to Saskatoon on Wednesday at 7 o’clock.
