A 24-year-old man from Brampton, Ontario has been charged after he was caught hauling 9.3 million illegal cigarettes after evading a check-stop at the Langham weigh scale.
On November 14th, Saskatoon RCMP Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan and Saskatchewan Highway Patrol were conducting a check stop on Highway 16, when at around 3:00 am, a commercial vehicle entered the check stop and continued through it without stopping.
Once the vehicle was brought back to the stop, officers inspected the trailer and found 24 pallets of un-stamped tobacco, totalling in over $4.4 million in evaded tax dollars.
Akashdeep Akashdeep was charged with one count of un-stamped tobacco for the purpose of sale, one count of possessing un-stamped tobacco under the Tobacco Act and one count of possessing un-stamped tobacco under the Excise Act. He appeared in court in Saskatoon on Monday.
RCMP are continuing to investigate the incident.
