The Saskatchewan Ministry of Health issued an overdose alert Thursday afternoon for Regina with three deaths reported in the last 24 hours from suspected illegal drugs possibly sold as fentanyl or gabapentin.
The alert says unknown dangerous drugs continue to circulate in the city of Regina. In the month of November, emergency responders in Regina have attended over 100 suspected overdose calls with reports of unconsciousness, cardiac arrest, hospital intervention and multiple additional deaths. In the case of the three most recent fatalities, the Saskatchewan Coroners Service, Regina Police Service and Regina Fire and Protective Services said Naloxone was administered multiple times, but did not prevent these deaths. Naloxone will counter the effects of opioids, but not other substances like methamphetamine and/or benzodiazepine.
