The Saskatchewan NDP is drawing attention to recent Saskatoon Police Service data that suggests violent crime is on the rise.
An NDP news release says there were 4,800 violent incidents in 2025, which equates to about 13 incidents per day. These violent acts include 3,135 assaults, 911 vehicle thefts, 556 home break ins, and 743 non-residential break ins. That figure also included 487 robberies, 445 instances of threats being issued, and 59 kidnappings.
In disbelief, Hugh Gordon, NDP Associate Public Safety Critic says kidnappings in Saskatoon are “unacceptable and there is no evidence that the Sask. Party has done a thing to make our communities safer.”
In 2024, there were 38 reported kidnappings. Residential break-and-enters also increased 110 per cent year-over-year, according to the data.
The Opposition urges the Provincial Government to step in and protect the residents of Saskatchewan’s largest city. Gordon adds that “A Saskatchewan NDP Government led by Carla Beck will invest immediately in initiatives to get tough on crime and tough on the causes of crime.”
In a year-end interview with Saskatoon Police Chief Cam McBride, he told CJWW News that violent crime was up 2.5 per cent over all year-over-year, but more specifically, serious crimes like homicides and armed robberies were down in 2025.
In response to the NDP’s claims, the Province says, “The safety of our communities and neighbourhoods is a top priority for the Government of Saskatchewan. Year-over-year, total violent crime in Saskatoon was stable, with Saskatoon Police Service data indicating a trending decline in violent crime as 2025 progressed. Common assaults were accountable for a majority of the increase, whereas most other violent crime categories saw a decrease year-over-year.”
