The provincial government says it is upgrading Highway 5 . Minister responsible Greg Ottenbreit says, “Highway 5 is a key economic corridor in our province, linking the Saskatoon region with the rest of the country.” HJR Asphalt of Saskatoon has the contract for segment one which involves about 10 km of widening and sight-line improvements through the hills and valleys east of the old Highway 27, to Blucher Road. Construction is to begin in the spring and be completed in the fall. The total cost is about $18.8 million.
Next spring, segment two will involve a 30 km section of the roadway from Blucher Road to Highway 2 and will involve, among other things, passing lanes, widening the shoulders, and resurfacing. The final segment will include twinning Highway 5 from the existing section east of Saskatoon past Highway 316 to the old 27 road. That work will begin in the spring of 2023 with completion by 2025.
