Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe says in 2019, despite a 32% decline in trade with China, Saskatchewan exported nearly $30 billion worth of products to international markets. He says the province saw significant increases in Saskatchewan’s exports to other markets.

The government says our exports to Bangladesh went up 118%, the EU increased 59%, the United Arab Emirates saw a 40% increase, India was up 23% and Brazil by 13%.

Saskatchewan’s top export products included crude oil, potash, wheat, pulse crops, canola oil, barley, oats, agricultural machinery, and refined petroleum. Overall, exports were down 3% which the province says is due mainly to trade actions by China.

In March 2019 the Chinese government revoked export permits to two grain companies; Richardson and Viterra. The reason given was quality issues
but it’s widely believed a diplomatic spat involving the detention of a senior Huawei executive in Vancouver is the reason. The Canola Council of Canada estimates industry losses at one billion dollars.
