The Gordon Tootoosis Nikaniwin Theatre’s Circle of Voices program will debut its new play Thursday that takes on discrimination in healthcare.
First time director, Marcel Petit says the play will look at experiences that many Indigenous peoples have faced while in the healthcare system.
Petit adds they’re not pointing any fingers at anyone, but it’s a story that needs to be told given that some Indigenous peoples in Saskatoon have faced or are facing the same issues that are portrayed in the play titled “Hospitals, Broken Pianos”.
Long waits to see a doctor, assumptions of addiction and being treated as the “other” in the healthcare system are some of the issues that the characters will face.
The first time director adds that the play offers a little bit of everything.
“It’s got a little bit of laughter, um, it’s got some emotion to it, but it really just tells a story that needs to be told that’s happening here in this city right now.”
The play includes seven actors who are all under the age of 22.
