Lloydminster RCMP say they responded to five suspected overdoses in the span of about seven hours and at least four doses of Narcan was need to help. In one instance Lloydminster RCMP members transported the person in need to the hospital because of a delay with ground ambulance services.
They say all of these overdoses were separate incidents and none resulted in a fatality.
Their investigation has not yet indicated where the drugs consumed were purchased and althought drug analysis still needs to be completed, it is suspected that these drugs may have been laced or have higher levels of opioids than expected.
Lloydminster RCMP are issuing this public notice as a reminder of the dangers of consuming illicit drugs.
Lloydminster RCMP would also like to remind the public that the signs of a fentanyl overdose include:
-Slow, irregular, and shallow breathing,
-pinpoint pupils, muscle stiffness
-seizures, and
-unconsciousness.
Furthermore, should you still choose to consume illicit drugs, here are some safe practices to follow:
-Avoid using while alone.
-Ask someone to check on you or consume while on the phone with a trusted person who is able to call for assistance in the event of an overdose.
-Know the signs and symptoms of poisoning/overdose and call 911 for direction and support.
-Carry a naloxone kit, and know how to use it, so you can respond to a suspected opioid poisoning/overdose.
-Consider using the Digital Overdose Response System app when consuming drugs.
