Saskatoon’s Fire Department was called out to the Nutrien Vanscoy Potash Operation just southwest of Saskatoon around 10:30 p.m. Saturday night to help deal with a chemical fire that involved three storage tanks.
The request for support came from the RM of Montrose Fire Department which asked for Hazmat assistance. When Hazmat got to the scene they called for two fire engines with master stream capability in order to protect nearby structures.
The Saskatoon Fire Department was released from the scene at 5 a.m. Sunday morning, although a news release sent out around that time did indicate the fire was still on-going.
An email sent to CJWW News early Sunday afternoon from Nutrien spokesperson, Will Tigley said that the company hasn’t received confirmation on the cause of the fire.
Tigley did indicate that the three storage tanks contained some treatment fluids used for product.
He adds Nutrien is still dealing with the situation and that there’s no timeline of when damage estimates will be provided.
The Saskatoon Fire Department said Sunday morning that more details and information will be made available Monday. There were no injuries connected to the storage tanks being on fire.
