The Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia announced Friday that a new secondary school will be built at a new location in the community.
In February in one of Canada’s deadliest mass shootings, 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar shot and killed her mother and 11-year-old half-brother at the family home, before killing five students, an education assistant and herself at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.
Following consultations with victim’s families, students, teachers, experts, and community members, the Peace River South school board has requested the new school and that the current school is removed quickly.
In the meantime, finishing touches are being completed on large modular classrooms provided by the province. Students will move into these later this month.
