At a time when division and judgement run rampant, SUM Theatre is presenting a story about cooperation, democracy, and personal choice.
Artistic Director Mackenzie Dawson says The Colour of The Town is an all-ages production, taking place in over 35 parks across Saskatchewan as part of Theatre in the Park. Dawson says this year’s production is about a town that consistently votes to paint the buildings taupe, until a colourful visitor comes to town and opens their eyes to new possibilities.
“What happens when a butterfly comes to town and some of the town’s youth learn about other colours and people start to vote differently? Will anyone be open to change or seeing new colours added to the town?”
Dawson says the play will encourage viewers not to distance themselves from people with differing opinions, while also bringing neighbors together outdoors to enjoy some live theatre.
“This is a 45-minute show that they can see within walking distance of their house. That makes it an easy in for just about anybody. They don’t have to book a ticket. They can just bring a blanket or a lawn chair and join us for a little bit in the park.”
Theatre in the Park is also ready to welcome its 100,000th audience member in its 14th season.
“That’s 100,000 people who have had the chance to see a professional theatre show for free, who get to meet their neighbours, and build a sense of belonging.”
He adds that the show is for all ages, with puppets to entertain the young ones, and a thoughtful topic to disseminate for young adults, parents, and grandparents.
The show runs from May 14th to June 30, and the schedule of free performances in included in a link with this story online.
