Tuesday, Health Canada authorized a generic version of the drug Wegovy.

Previously Health Canada had approved generic versions of Ozempic. There are now two companies who can sell the generic version of Ozempic semaglutide injection for weight loss.

This semaglutide injection is indicated for the once-weekly treatment of patients 12 years and over, as a supplement to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for chronic weight management.

Health Canada says its review ensures that differences between these products do not affect the safety, efficacy, or quality of the drug.

Health Canada also says in Canada, many generic medications are 45 to 90 per cent cheaper than the brand name versions.
