Approximately 76,000 more Saskatchewan women are now eligible to book routine screening mammograms through the province’s BreastCheck program following the final phase of an expanded breast cancer screening initiative.
As of July 1, women aged 40 and older can schedule screening mammograms without a referral if they meet the program’s eligibility criteria.
The change completes an 18-month phased expansion that began in January 2025, gradually lowering the minimum screening age from 50 to 40.
According to the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency, about 75 per cent of breast cancers in Saskatchewan are detected at an early stage through routine BreastCheck screening mammograms.
The Saskatchewan Health Authority said the expanded program will allow more women to take an active role in monitoring their breast health through earlier access to routine screening.
Health officials recommend most eligible women receive a screening mammogram every two years.
