Carter Beck (pictured) made a return to Saskatoon Wednesday night that was well-attended, but the Lethbridge Bulls spoiled the second part of the party at Cairns Field.
One of the first stars from the first two years of the Berries’ franchise in the W-C-B-L – Beck met with the local media, signed autographs for many in the crowd of 2,014 and threw out the ceremonial first pitch – a video link of which can be seen at the end of this story. The Carnduff product was selected in the first round of the Major League Baseball Draft back on Saturday, 26th overall by the Atlanta Braves. Beck was the first-ever player with ties to the Saskatoon Berries to have his name called, the first Canadian chosen in 2026 and became the highest choice of any player from Saskatchewan in draft history.
Once the opening ceremonies were done, Saskatoon and Lethbridge played a back-and-forth contest that ended up with the Bulls winning 10-8 in 10 innings, putting the brakes to the Berries’ winning streak at five games. Saskatoon head coach Joe Carnahan was ejected in the top of the third inning by home plate umpire Scott Mostoway after Carnahan went out to the mound to supposedly chat with starting pitcher Adam Korte who had just walked two Lethbridge batters in a row. However, Carnahan waited for Mostoway to come to the mound to break up the session and got into it with the umpire regarding his interpretation of the strike zone – getting tossed for his troubles. The Berries battled back twice to tie the game and force extra innings, but the now 23-11 Bulls scored twice in the 10th inning on a bloop single to left field by centre fielder Kalem Haney with the bases loaded. Saskatoon takes their 26-12 record on the road for eight straight games, beginning Thursday in Medicine Hat. The trip is split into two parts, interrupted this weekend by the W-C-B-L all-star break with festivities on Saturday and Sunday at Cairns Field. The Berries’ next home game isn’t until July 27th, the start of a three-game series against Medicine Hat. Following is the video of Carter Beck’s ceremonial first pitch, followed by the media scrum with him – as well as a media scrum with Carnahan…..
