On Monday, eye witnesses watched, while on the phone with 9-1-1, a possible tragedy averted.

Passersby walking along the river spotted two people and a dog running out onto the ice of the river after another dog had gone into the frigid river water. The second dog also jumped in.

The Saskatoon Fire Department says if you see anyone in distress out on the river to call 9-1-1 immediately. In this case the dogs managed to get onto the ice and the foursome managed to get to shore without further disaster.

Assistant Fire Chief Wayne Rodger says the ponds in local neighbourhoods can also be unsafe with spring on the way.

The Assistant Chief says regardless of the season, no one should be out on the ice that covers the South Saskatchewan River. Rodger also reminds residents walking near the river, or by one of the community ponds, to ensure their pets are on a leash so they don’t end up in the water.
