Scam alert from Saskatoon Police. The department says they have received over a hundred calls from victims reporting fraud artists calling them, claiming to be government or police or RCMP, saying there are warrants out for the victim’s arrest for money laundering, child exploitation, or theft. The con then involves getting their personal information and for a few digits of their social insurance number. Then the victim is told the charges can be cleared up by payment through Bitcoin machines. Later on, the fraudster will call back and try to get additional numbers from their SIN. Investigators are advising people to exercise extreme caution when dealing with money online.
