The City of Saskatoon is laying off a number of casual staff. City Manager Jeff Jorgenson says, “Layoffs are an important step to enable staff, without any scheduled hours, the ability to access options such as employment insurance benefits as soon as possible.” Casual staff are employees whose hours are typically scheduled on a weekly to monthly basis, based on work needed. Jorgenson says that, for permanent staff, the city is not looking at significant layoffs in the coming weeks.
The city is also asking transit riders to use the bus only for essential travel.
The household glass program with SARCAN is temporarily suspended. SARCAN has closed locations across the province. Residents are asked to avoid overfilling their Blue Cart or Bin and to hang onto their recyclables until their next collection day.
The city is suspending all visitor services at Gordon Howe Campground and will stop taking new reservations until May 1st.
Meter upgrade appointments are suspended until further notice.
The city has implemented a three month grace period for paying property tax as a mean’s of financial relief for people. Those on the TIPPS program can ask to be removed at any time should they also need financial relief. The full Property Tax amount would then be due on September 30th.
