An advocacy group doesn’t want youth who are transitioning out of the care of the Social Services Ministry to fall through the cracks during the COVID-19 pandemic.
That’s why the Saskatchewan Youth in Care and Custody Network has written a letter to the government calling for all youth ‘aging out’ of care to remain in their current agreement without interruption to their supports for a year.
Spokesperson Richard Rothenburger says it’s challenging for these youth under normal circumstances, trying to find a place to live and looking for a job or trying to graduate from high school.
When in care, they also have access to other supports like mental health and addictions counseling.
Rothenburger would also like some follow-up on youth who have transitioned from care in the past year to ensure they have safe housing and financial aid.
With all of the business closures, Rothenburger expects many jobs have been lost and it will be challenging finding new ones.
