Today is the deadline for taking down all ice fishing shelters north of Highway 16. If they aren’t removed, owners may be prosecuted and the structure and contents may be moved of the ice and confiscated. Litter also has to be removed when the shelters are taken off the ice. The province says that, every year, shelters are abandoned which can pose a hazard to boaters, water-skiers, and others. Pieces of abandoned shelters can also wash up on shore, causing environmental hazards.
