A discouraging word from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business: 44 per cent of shuttered businesses in Saskatchewan are not confident that they will ever reopen. Compare that to 32 per cent nationally who hold that fear. The Federation says more needs to be done than just the current federal support programs. 29 per cent of businesses in this province remain fully open. 19 per cent are fully closed. 50 per cent are partially shut down. 69 per cent of small business owners here say tax deferrals are not enough; they want tax holidays. The CFIB is asking for that from the province, as well as direct help with rent and mortgage payments. The Federation is also joining the Canadian Taxpayers Federation in its call for the federal government to delay the planned carbon tax increase. Local CFIB spokesperson Marilyn Braun-Pollon says the burden of that tax falls heavily on small businesses. The Prime Minster says the tax will go ahead, as of today, regardless.
