The NDP are calling on the Saskatchewan government to step support and protections for First Nations and Metis people who are at significant risk from the spread of COVID-19.
NDP Leader Ryan Meili says First Nations and Metis leaders are doing everything they can to prepare their communities, but he believes the response from the province has been slow and limited.
The NDP called on the province to:
- Step up commitments to ensure safe housing for on-and-off reserve populations.
- To address acute food security concerns in rural and remote areas of the province as supply chains are interrupted and prices rise.
- To ensure protections for health care workers including, personal protective equipment (PPE) resources.
- An increase in communication and involvement of First Nations and Metis leaders in decision making for pandemic planning and response.
Doyle Vermette, critic for Northern Saskatchewan and Associate critic for First Nations and Metis Relations says for the health of the entire province, the province needs to act now.
