Are our phones listening to our conversations in order to target specific advertisements to us?
Many people claim to have seen just that, speaking about something they might buy and then seeing it advertised online soon after.
Jake Moore a security specialist with ESET internet security says it’s unlikely phones are listening and there is a reasonable explanation for targeted adds. He says that social media platforms have incredible search algorithms, that include information on what we like, search for and even have image recognition to see what we’re posting in photos.
Moore recently ran tests to see if his phone was listening to him, using keywords in conversations he attempted to sway the advertising. He found that the advertising was based more off previous searches and information provided to social media. More explained it would be very difficult for social media companies to consistently record people without their consent, and it would be highly illegal.
