We need to continue with the message of physical distancing and staying home whenever possible. That from Dr. Johnmark Opondo at an online special meeting of the City of Saskatoon’s Governance and Priorities Committee.
The Saskatchewan Health Authority medical health officer says it may seem like a small thing, but it can save lives. Dr. Opondo commented that having committee and council meetings online instead of at City Hall is a good example to the public about how things can be done.
As of Monday, there were 253 cases of COVID-19 in the province but 127 of those are from Saskatoon and area. Opondo doesn’t believe there is something specifically being done incorrectly in Saskatoon but that it has more to do with the city being an important hub for traffic within the province and internationally.
Dr. Opondo commented that down the road, more guidelines may be needed noting that since there are more adverse health outcomes for seniors, Oas the pandemic continues to grow, the province may consider recommendations that if you are over 70, you would need to stay home.
He realizes that is a big ask of many active seniors. If that were to happen, family, friends and neighbours would be asked to support them by delivering supplies and through phone and video chats.
