Moose Jaw firefighters battled two grass fires in the city on Sunday. Gusty winds were contributing to the spread of the fires, the first of which started around 1p.m. beside the north on-ramp of the 9th Avenue Bridge. The city’s High Street and the bridge were closed for several hours while crews fought the blaze which stretched about four blocks east.
As firefighters started getting a handle on that fire, another grass fire sparked just east of 24th Avenue on the southwest edge of the city. Both fires were brought under control but are being monitored for hot spots. The cause of the two grass fires is under investigation.
There has been a spate of grass fires in Saskatchewan just days after the province urged residents, farmers and landowners to take precautions in preventing wildfires and grass fires.
There was a grass fire Thursday evening on private property near the Beaver Creek Conservation area south of Saskatoon. Then the Saskatoon Fire Department was called out to a large grass fire west of Saskatoon on Saturday. Corman Park Police had tweeted that motorists should avoid using township road 384 and Highway 305. Shortly before 4 on Saturday afternoon, the Saskatoon Fire Department responded, at the request of Dalmeny Fire and Rescue, to help control the blaze. And south of Unity on Saturday Highway 21 was blocked about 16 kilometres south of the community also due to a large grass fire.
