The Canadian Federation of Independent Business says small business confidence took some steps in the right direction in the latter part of April. Confidence was up almost nine points since the beginning of the month, rising to a national index of 46.4 on the Business Barometer.Vice-president and chief economist Ted Mallett says, “This could be a reflection of more refined policy responses from the government as well as businesses learning to operate more effectively under trying conditions.” Saskatchewan businesses were in on that confidence boost, showing the second highest index level in Canada at 50.8. An index level nearer to 65 indicates the economy is growing at its potential. The natural resources sector registered no movement and had the lowest level of optimism at 33.3 index points; agriculture was at 39.5. Health services posted the highest confidence level at 57.1.
