Wood Buffalo RCMP received an emergency call from two men who had been riding on ATVs on a trail northeast of For MacKay when the Athabasca River suddenly rose and overtook them. They held onto a submerged log and contacted emergency crews. Search and rescue, regional emergency services, and helicopters were all brought in to aid in the rescue. One man was air-lifted to hospital in critical condition where he died. The other man was taken to hospital by ambulance. Two women, two children and two dogs were rescued from a nearby cabin. No names will be released.
