The 3 month warning period for the new photo speed enforcement camera (PSE), set up at the intersection of Highway 41 and Highway 2 near Wakaw is now over, and active ticketing has now gone live.
During the trial period between January 24th, to April 13th the camera caught 640 violations of the 80 KM/H speed limit. Some of the violations including vehicles that are exempt like emergency vehicles, but the camera saw also saw one vehicle clocked at 125 km/h, 45 km/h over the posted limit.
Tyler McMurchy Media Relations Manager with SGI says the number of violations represents about 1.17 percent of vehicles that traveled through during the time-frame. He adds the target for the PSE program is for violations to be under 1 percent and that many PSEs across the province achieve well under that.
McMurchy explains that the intersection has seen a persistent speeding issue and the idea behind the PSE camera is for people to adjust their speeds and habits. The goal, he says, is not to generate revenue, it is to generate safety.
McMurchy says that any revenue generated is split towards general revenue in the province, covering the operation of cameras and put towards traffic safety fund grants.
Those grants can be applied to by any Saskatchewan communities to improve things like traffic signals, crosswalks and other improvements to traffic safety.
