Beethoven was the original rock star and 250 years later through his music, he is alive and well. Orchestras worldwide have been planning celebrations for the anniversary of his birth, but thanks to the pandemic, we are not allowed to gather together to appreciate his talent.
The Saskatoon Symphony orchestra had an 8-day music festival planned, but has turned its efforts to a month-long celebration on Facebook. It kicks off Saturday with guest vocalist Jardena Gertler-Jaffe, who is originally from Saskatoon and now living in New York.
She feels the pandemic has brought to the forefront just how important art and music is in our daily lives, and hopes people will remember that and support their chosen favourites once we are able to commune together again.
All of the featured artists this month are originally from Saskatoon. Along with Soprano Gertler-Jaffe, vocalist Spencer McKnight, violinist Carisa Klopoushak and pianist Godwin Friesen will be performing.
There will also be debates from the SSO’s conductor and next season’s guest conductors about which symphony recording is the best, and musical celebrities are creating their favourite playlists of Beethoven’s music.
