Two fire investigations in the city have lead the Saskatoon Fire Department to recommend people stay attentive while cooking, by staying in the kitchen and focusing on the task.
An investigation into a fire that occurred in the 2400 block of Kenderdine Road on Wednesday has identified the cause as accidental and the result of unattended cooking. The damage is estimated at $10,000.
One person suffered serious burns in the fire that occurred at a multi-unit townhouse. Fire crews were sent out just before four o’clock Wednesday afternoon, after they were alerted by a 911 hang-up call where little detail was provided before the caller hung up. Based on what they were told, crews were alerted from six fire stations. When firefighters arrived they found occupants already evacuating and only light smoke. The fire was near the stove and had extended into cupboards. It was under control in less than 10 minutes of arriving on the scene. The injured person was taken to hospital for treatment.
The investigation into a fire that occurred in the 800 block of University Drive on the same day has also concluded. A fire investigator identified the cause of fire to also be a result of unattended cooking. Damage has been estimated at approximately $10,000.
One person was burned in the kitchen fire around 7:42 Wednesday night. Her injuries were described as minor. By the time crews from the Saskatoon Fire Department arrived, the occupants had already put out the fire with an extinguisher. Firefighters used fans to ventilate smoke from the house.
The Saskatoon Fire Department recommend using a timer for meals that may take additional time to cook or prepare.
