Staying socially distant, the Lieutenant Governor Russ Mirasty, his wife, Mrs. Donna Mirasty and Premier Scott Moe commemorated the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day at the Saskatchewan War Memorial.
Mirasty points out that Victory in Europe Day is particularly important to Canadians because it largely marked the end of fighting for Canadian Forces after nearly six years of war.
Premier Moe says more than 5,000 Saskatchewan residents paid the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of peace. The Saskatchewan War Memorial lists the names of all of Saskatchewan’s fallen.
More than one million Canadians and Newfoundlanders served in WWII and more than 45 thousand gave their lives. Newfoundland didn’t join Confederation until 1949 and its residents fought in World War II as the Newfoundland regiment.
