A former Saskatchewan resident, and World War Two Mtis Veteran, has received formal thanks from the Mtis Nation, a $20 thousand Recognition Payment, and an apology from Canada. Marie Knight was born in Shand Saskatchewan on March 26th, 1922. At the age of 20, she left the town and joined the army. She worked as the secretary to Major Ramsay at the Radar Training Centre in Kingston Ontario until June 1946. After her service she returned to Estevan and later moved to Ontario. The Recognition Payment she received is part of the Mtis Veterans Legacy Program established in partnership with the Trudeau government to commemorate forgotten Mtis soldiers. Last year, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued an apology for the injustices that Mtis Veterans faced upon returning to Canada. Recognition Payments are being issued to every surviving Word War Two Mtis Veteran.
