A former Chief of the Cote First Nation and the Yorkton Tribal Council has died. Elder Tony Cote was 84. His list of accomplishments include serving in the Canadian Armed Forces from 1952 to ’59, and advocating for First Nations veterans to be compensated by the federal government. Cote was also a contributor to establishing the first college for Indigenous students, which eventually became the First Nation University of Canada. The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations says a wake will be held on Saturday with a funeral to follow on Monday at 10:00 am at the Cote Band hall on the Cote First Nation.
