The Saskatoon Fire Department has begun almost 2 dozen investigations so far this May.
Assistant Fire Chief Wayne Rodger says there has been a spike in the number of fire calls particularly in the last week, with around 10 between last Wednesday and Monday morning.
Fire investigations begin when the blaze is substantial enough to need answers as to the cause.
A single dumpster fire might not be enough, but if there are a series of fires like there were early in the morning on May 14th , there would be an investigation.
The Fire Department responded to 7 fires, with 2 garage fires and 5 dumpster fires.
Of the 20 investigations this month, 5 have been deemed accidental, 7 are arson, and 8 haven’t been determined yet.
Rodger couldn’t confirm if there is 1 or more suspicious people connected to the arson investigations.
Once a fire is considered arson-related, the file is handed over to the police.
