As of a provincial court decision on Wednesday, all First Nations people in Canada are allowed to hunt in Saskatchewan without a license.

Prior to that only indigenous people from Treaties 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10 could hunt for food on Crown land in the province.

And everyone else had to get a hunting license.

The Chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indigenous Nations calls it a landmark case. Bobby Cameron says the treaties, which are their inheritable rights, are not bound by provincial borders.

The case is based on an incident in October 2018. That’s when two men from the Six Nations First Nation in Ontario were charged with unlawful hunting in Moose Mountain Provincial Park.
